What to Expect When Getting Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin laminates of porcelain which are applied to the surfaces of the teeth in order to change the shape, shade and/or alignment of teeth, and can also be used to improve function. Little or no tooth structure may need to be prepared in order to achieve the desired result. They are a conservative way to dramatically enhance one’s smile.

Consultation

As you visit with Dr. Foote, you will discuss what you want to change about your teeth, your bite, and your smile. With this information, your smile can be designed with the desired outcome. He will discuss the diagnostic steps, fees, appointments, and follow-up which is involved in the process. At this appointment, models of your teeth and other records may also be obtained in order to begin treatment.

Porcelain Veneers: What to Expect

At the preparation appointment, the teeth may or may not need to be shaped in order to help create the smile that you want. Impressions and photos are taken in order to convey the information to the dental laboratory technician who will be fabricating the custom-made veneers. You also will leave this appointment with provisional restorations which are the “blueprint” for the final restorations. With these, we are able to adjust and modify the shape so that you are pleased with the appearance and so that we can be confident of a predictable outcome. At the final visit, you are able to preview the restorations prior to the final cementation. Once bonded to the teeth, they become an extremely strong and beautiful part of your smile.

Follow-Up

Dr. Foote will explain to you how to care for your veneers, but it essentially involves regular visits for teeth cleanings, proper home care, and avoiding damaging habits which can chip the porcelain (“using your teeth as a tool”).
